We’re big on firsts.  And big on being best – for our patients.  So, it’s no surprise that one of our stellar internal medicine specialists, Robert Vaschak has become the first physician in the region to attain certification as a culinary medicine nutrition specialist. 

And while his traditional philosophies and methods are unchanged; he has always incorporated culinary education in the disease prevention and treatment of his patients.  Now he has the credentials to back up his interest and passion in nutrition as key to healthy living.

He strongly believes in evidence-based diet plans and eschews fad practices.  For himself as well as his patients, he prescribes a Mediterranean diet plan of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, oils, fish, and whole grains – while limiting dairy and meats.

The Mediterranean diet is based on the traditional foods that people used to eat in countries like Italy and Greece back in the 60s.  Researchers discovered these people were exceptionally healthy compared to most Americans and had a low risk of many lifestyle-related diseases.  Loads of studies now show the Mediterranean diet can lead to weight loss and help prevent heart attacks, strokes, type 2 diabetes, and premature death.

Dr. Vaschak already had a degree in nutrition from The Ohio State University.  This additional certification requires a minimum of 60 credit hours, at least 12 of which must be hands-on at an approved culinary medicine teaching kitchen.  More information is available at https://www.healthmeetsfood.com/.
